This is the Alberta Premiere of a new NFB Documentary about the unfinished business of feminism in Canada Directed by Karen Cho and Produced by Ravida Din. The film looks back at the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, started in 1967 and finally completed and released in 1971, as an eye-opening and definitive blueprint for action on most issues affecting women in this country at that time. In the 40 years since the release of that report, has progress been made?

Using extensive archival footage and new interview material, this film explores the status of women and feminism in Canada today. The film breaks down into three key parts: violence against women, reproductive rights and child care. Archival and recent interviewees include Adrienne Clarkson, Dr. Henry Morgentaler, Peggy Cooke and a number of prominent politicians and feminist thinkers. Not surprisingly, this look at the history of the women’s movement in Canada concludes that the struggle is even greater today, at a atime when government concern over economic challenges seems to take precedence over progressive social issues. It is impossible not to react in a strong fashion to the arguments presented so succintly in this film.

After the film, stay on for a short half hour Q and A session about the unfinished business of the Morgentaler decision and the current state of the reproductive rights movement in Canada.
